SEIZURE OF 15950 KG. OF RED SANDERS WOOD HAVING TOTAL SEIZURE VALUE ` 1.77 CRORE
Based on specific intelligence, the Siliguri Regional unit of DRI, Kolkata effected a seizure of Red Sanders Wood weighing 15950 kg. valued at ` 1.59 crore from two trucks bearing registration no. UP-17T-1821 and HR-58A-2803 on 16.07.2011 near Bijlimoni T.E., Dist-Darjeeling. The logs of Red Sanders Wood were kept concealed under 750 pcs. of Indian style sanitary pans & 612 pcs. of small pipes. The goods alongwith concealment materials and the carrier trucks were seized under section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962 on reasons to believe that the said Red Sanders Wood (a prohibited item for export as per the EXIM Policy) were meant for illegal export through Moreh border. Total seizure value of the case is ` 1.77 crore. Four persons traveling in the vehicles including two drivers involved in the smuggling activity were arrested. Further investigation is in progress.
