Sensex kisses 16K mark, Nifty at 15-mth high

Benchmarks finally broke out of the trading range and ended with huge gains. The heavy weight index like Tata Motors, Reliance Communications and ICICI Bank led the upmove.

Bombay Stock Exchange ended at 16024.85, up 335.73 points or 2.13 per cent. The index touched an intra-day high of 16030.27 and low of 15793.27.

National Stock Exchanges Nifty was at 4787.55, up 107.15 points or 2.29 per cent. The broader index hit a high of 4790 and low of 4679.30.

BSE Midcap Index was up 2.28 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 2.78 per cent higher.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index gained 5.41 per cent, BSE Metal Index jumped 4.02 per cent and BSE Bankex moved 3.17 per cent higher.

Biggest Sensex gainers comprised Tata Motors (12.38%), Reliance Communications (6.71%), ICICI Bank (6.7%), Jaiprakash Associates (5.88%) and Sterlite Industries (5.54%).

ITC (-1.05%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (-0.85%) were the only laggards in the 30-share index.

Market breadth on BSE showed 2231 advances against 591 declines.
