Equities ended lackluster session with modest gains as traders settled positions on the last day of August F&O series. FMCG, power and banks ended in the green while oil&gas, realty and pharma dragged.
Bombay Stock Exchanges Sensex closed at 18220.66, up 41.02 points or 0.23 per cent. The index touched intraday high of 18261.05 and low of 18159.13.
National Stock Exchanges Nifty ended at 5478.30, up 15.95 points or 0.29 per cent. The index touched a low of 5454.70 and high of 5486.55 in todays trade.
BSE Midcap Index was down 0.03 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.08 per cent higher.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE FMCG Index was up 1.02 per cent, BSE Power Index moved 0.96 per cent higher and BSE Bankex advanced 0.49 per cent. BSE Oil&gas Index slipped 0.61 per cent and BSE Realty Index was down 0.57 per cent.
NTPC (2.38%), DLF (1.86%), ITC (1.53%), Tata Power (1.50%) and HDFC (1.37%) were amongst the top Sensex gainers.
Reliance Communications (-2.35%), Sterlite Industries (-1.36%), Jaiprakash Associates (-1.25%), Reliance Industries (-1.20%) and Cipla (-0.92%) led the decline.
Market breadth was negative on the BSE with 774 declines against 567 advances.
