Tamil Nadu announces tax exemption on computers
August, 24th 2006
The Tamil Nadu government will exempt computers made by companies with an investment of over Rs 100 crore in SEZs in the state from general and central sales tax without any limit, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said on Wednesday. Presenting the demand for grants for industries and IT in the state assembly, he said this concession would be granted for 10 years from the year of commencement of commercial production for firms that meet the condition. The state government has decided to set up an E-Governance Training Academy and Rs 20 lakh has been provided for 2006-07 for it, he said. A sum of Rs 10 lakh has also been provided for 2006-07 for training officers and staff on a public-private partnership model as part of the e-governance initiative. Karunanidhi said this initiative required familiarity and extensive use of computers. District collectors handle sensitive data and work beyond office hours, and hence they needed a laptop, he said. The government will provide Rs 50 lakh this year for the supply of laptops to collectors, he said.
