Mumbai tops I-T returns charts in July |
|
August, 24th 2006 |
More than eight lakh income tax returns have been filed in the Mumbai zone in July, making it the top returns filer among metros. It was closely followed by Delhi where 7.21 lakh returns have been filed. As many as 6.94 lakh tax returns have been filed with the Bangalore income tax office, while Chennai got 6.86 lakh.
Kolkata is yet to compile the data. There has been a 55% rise in the returns filed by individual and salaried tax payers in July this year, making for an unprecedented rush. The last date for filing returns was July 31. Filing of returns in July has grown from 61.80 lakh in 05 to 95.89 lakh in 06.
Tax officials are pleased at the response and expect the number of filers to touch 4 crore this year. Over all, filing of returns for the fiscal year has increased by 37.7%. The number of returns filed up to July this year was 126.49 lakh as against 91.84 lakh recorded last year in the same period.
However, these are provisional figures and the number of returns filed is expected to go up further as numbers from all post offices have not been compiled as yet. For the first time, post offices have received tax returns this year.
Income tax department sources attribute the rise in filing of returns by individuals to the campaign carried out by it citing the spectre of annual information returns in a big way. They also pointed out that while Mumbai and Delhi only get returns from the city, Bangalore and Chennai figures also include returns from the region. A comparison of regional figures show, Chandigarh which takes the Northern region within its sweep, including Jammu & Kashmir got the maximum number of 10.83 lakh returns.
