Assam government to dismantle all sales tax check-gates post Goods and Services Tax
July, 03rd 2017

With the GST regime coming into force, the Assam government has decided to dismantle all the sales tax check-gates across the state in 30 to 45 days.

"There are about seven to eight check gates in the state. These check gates have become redundant now with the enforcement of GST. We are hopeful in 30 to 45 days we will be able to abolish all the check gates," finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at an interactive session with entrepreneurs on GST here on Sunday.

In the absence of check gates, Sarma said that the government will soon open e-way bill system within this month. E-way bill is a must for movement of goods worth over Rs 50,000 under GST for which it needs online registration of the consignment.

Asserting that Assam being a consumer state is all set to benefit from the GST regime, Sarma, however, conceded that the state will have to suffer loss in tax collection for one to two years. He added that the loss is primarily because many of the items on which the state used to collect taxes were now included in the zero tax list under GST.

But Sarma said that the loss is going to be offset by Centre's compensation package for five years.

"Also the goods and service taxes will be shared equally between the state and centre. So the loss that we will incur will be brief. In the long run, the state is going to benefit from the GST because the new tax regime is going to help as a level playing field for consumer state like Assam," Sarma explained.
