The Thane anti-corruption bureau on Wednesday arrested a deputy sales tax commissioner, along with an accomplice, for accepting Rs 5 lakh as bribe from a Dombivli builder.
ACB officials said the main accused, Ramesh Jaid (50) who is posted at the Kalyan sales tax office, had issued a notice to the complainant, Deepak Mejari recently, asking him to clear his tax dues. Jaid gave him a shock by saying that he had tax dues of Rs 98 lakh. He threatened Mejari that he would be booked if did not pay him Rs 50 lakh. The amount later came down to Rs 20 lakh.
ACB laid a trap at Dombivli Gymkhana and caught Jaid and his accomplice Archie Visariya (25) with Rs 5 lakh, the the "first instalment" of the total bribe amount of Rs 20 lakh.
