Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has opposed the proposal of Madurai Corporation to levy a tax for solid waste management.
Appealing to the Corporation, the association, in a memorandum submitted to the Mayor, Mrs Thenmozhi Gopinathan, has pointed out that the Corporation is already getting income from levy of various taxes and it would not be proper to levy new taxes for every new scheme.
As a prime duty, the Corporation should maintain the city, instead of levying additional taxes. There would be income earned through the sale of fertilizer obtained from solid waste, the memorandum said.
The new proposed rates are very high too, and should be withdrawn.
