India's excise tax collection in August rose 22.7 percent from the previous month, a finance ministry official said on Friday.

"Of course, there is (a) clear sign of recovery and we hope to meet the budget target (for indirect tax receipts)," V. Sridhar, the chairman of Central Board of Excise and Customs, told reporters.
