Clarification on filing returns
July, 11th 2007

The Finance Ministry said on Tuesday that the due date for filing the return of income for the assessment year 2007-08 (relating to financial year 2006-07) expires on July 31 for non-corporate taxpayers, salaried persons, pensioners, professionals/self employed taxpayers with turnover below the tax audit limits.

An official release said that these categories of taxpayers, who are having difficulty in filing their tax returns, are advised to take necessary help of tax return preparers (TRPs) in the matter. It also said that the details of the certified TRPs available in different States/districts/cities/towns can be obtained from www.trpscheme.com.

The Finance Ministry has also rejected the position taken in reports of sections of the media that TRPs are awaiting further permission from the Government to start their work of helping small and medium taxpayers file their returns of income.

As soon as a certified TRP receives his/her unique identity card from the training partner NIIT, he/she is entitled to file income tax returns on behalf of the eligible categories of taxpayers. The new tax return forms have already been devised to furnish information about the TRP filing that return.
