Customs officials, JNPT staffers in CBI net in graft case |
|
June, 07th 2012 |
A deputy commissioner of Customs was among the four persons, including two employees of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), arrested today in a graft case by the CBI. Deputy Commissioner of Customs R K Singh, Customs Appriser Sanjay Prasad and two collection agents Shashikant Kokate and Rahul Devlekar were nabbed for allegedly demanding and accepting Rs 22000 in bribe from the complainant for clearing his consignment.
According to the Anti-Corruption wing of CBI, a trap was laid on receipt of the complaint against the accused. "Kokate was caught red handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 22000 on behalf of Singh and Prasad, while Devlekar, who is also involved in the case, was arrested later," the agency said in a statement here. The CBI said that Prasad sought the payoff for clearing the consignment, while Singh's role was to clear the bill of entry which he did only after receiving his share of the bribe amount. The agency said searches are being conducted at the office and residence of the accused persons.
