Want to check Income Tax Refund status online? Here's a quick guide

You can check the status of your Income Tax refund through the online service provided by the Income Tax Department. An Income Tax refund is an amount which is due to a taxpayer in case he pays taxes higher than his actual tax liability.

It is to be noted that the last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the assessment year 2019-20 is July 31, 2019. After the refund is determined, it is processed by the tax department. It can be checked either by income tax e-filing portal or through NSDL website. in order to check the refund status, you will be required to mention your permanent account number and the assessment year for which you have track the status of the refund.

According to tin.nsdl website, refunds are sent two modes- RTGS/NECS or through paper cheque. In the former, in order to enable credit of refund directly to the bank account, taxpayers bank account, MICR code of bank branch and correct communication address is mandatory. Whereas in the letter, bank account number and correct address are mandatory.
