Government issues over 1 lakh tax orders Faceless schemes
April, 08th 2021

The government has issued close to 1.2 lakh orders under the faceless assessment schemes but finds itself in a spot as several taxpayers, whose cases were taken up initially, are not responding to notices issued electronically. This has prompted the Central Board of Direct Taxes to seek cooperation, failing which exparte orders may be issued or the taxman can come calling.
“Certain people are still not responding to notices, unless they respond, it will result in ex parte orders. Ideally, we don’t want that. In many cases, we have observed that they have not given email IDs. I hope people give their communication ID so that we do not have to resort to other means of communication, to visits,” CBDT chairman P C Mody told TOI.

The government has shifted to a faceless assessment and appeal mechanism to ensure that there is no face-to-face interaction with tax officers to avoid complaints of harassment. While the assessment system is stabilising, the appeal units were earlier asked to focus on smaller cases, because the numbers are larger. Mody said now there is no restriction.

Mukesh Ambani fined for irregularities in RIL share issue

India's market regulator fined Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and others Rs 25 crore ($3.36 million) on Wednesday over irregularities in a two-decade-old share issue in the company. Ambani, his family members and some entities linked to them were penalised by Sebi for not making regulatory disclosures when they collectively raised their shareholding in Reliance by nearly 7% by subscribing to the January 2000 issue.

Wipro appoints Subha Tatavarti as CTO

IT services major Wipro Limited on Wednesday said it has appointed former Walmart executive Subha Tatavarti as its chief technology officer. The company has also appointed Suzanne Dann as senior vice president and sector head for Capital Markets and Insurance, North America region.

The challenge of people not responding, however, remains and the CBDT chief indicated that in the larger cases, a visit by tax officers is not ruled out.

Delhi govt has doubled its tax collection in 5yrs despite subsidies and not increasing tariff in electricity over the past 6 years.

“In one situation, where the person was not responding, we tried to do our backend analysis. Ultimately, we had to carry out a search, which revealed undisclosed turnover of almost Rs 400 crore. I can now understand, what was the hesitation in not responding to the notice. That option is always there. But I would want that option to be exercised in the rarest of rarest cases,” he said.
Mody urged taxpayers to address specific queries raised by tax authorities and refrain from the use of unparliamentary language, something which was noticed in a few responses. He said the Information Technology Act provides for harsh punishment for use of abusive language.
