Tax payers of the country want the jurisdiction of Income Tax ombudsman to be enlarged, the tax department's Kolkata ombudsman said Saturday.
"Currently, the ombudsman has been given 15 areas in which he can intervene. But tax payers want that the jurisdiction should be enlarged.
One of the duties of the ombudsman is to suggest the remedial measures for redressal of grievances," Kolkata ombudsman Manoj Mishra told reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce.
Noting that he had already settled 36 cases in the last two months, Mishra said currently about 300 cases were pending in eastern and northeastern region.
"The pending cases are mostly related to delay in issue of refunds and non-credit for tax deducted at source," he added.
