Mr Justice Surinder Singh Nirjhar of Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday took oath as the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. The Governor of West Bengal, Mr Gopal Krishna Gandhi, administered the oath at the Chief Justice's room in the High Court.
After Justice Mr V.S. Sirpurkar was elevated as a Puisne Judge of Supreme Court, Justice Mr Bhaskar Bhattacharya was acting as Chief Justice. Under his tenure, several landmark judgments including the shifting of venue of Book Fair and prosecution of State DG & IG in High Court Circuit Bench in the North Bengal case were delivered.
