Notice issued to Vodafone International by IT dept
February, 04th 2009

Curious about why the Income Tax department issued a show cause notice to Vodafone International after it took over telecom company
Hutchison Essar Ltd? You could soon be able to access minute details of the case, with the Income-Tax department all set to spill the beans.

'Let us Share', a book published by the Income Tax department will bring its best practices, orders and investigations that had remained under the shroud till now, in public domain.

The compilation of more than 250 pages, including searches and surveys, assessment orders, TDS orders and surveys since year 2004, will be released by Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam on Wednesday.

The readers would be able to find out how tax officials seized cash at the airport from a taxpayer on the basis of his cell phone number using a data mining tool and some other interesting scrutiny orders.

"The compilation brings together the best practices for the department officers. The first volume of the compilation will help in the skill enhancement of IT officers and will also hone their investigative skills," Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Member (Revenue) Saroj Bala said.

The book will act as a knowledge repository and reference material for future cases and source of motivation for officers, she said.

"It was a hard decision on our part to take this book to the public but we wanted the public to know. It was a decision to ensure transparency by keeping the assessees identity anonymous," Ms Bala said. More than 163 tax officials from across the country have contributed to the compilation with their cases.
