January, 17th 2011

If you havent paid your dues for years, and you owe MCD more than Rs 5 lakh, be ready to see your name in the newspapers. MCD is going to publish the names and addresses of 4,816 such people by next week. They hope that the embarrassment faced by people will help ensure faster payment.

We have been trying to get more people under the tax net and have collected comprehensive data on the exact number of major tax defaulters . We now have the names and addresses of such people, who have more than Rs 5 lakh as outstanding d ues. These 4,816 properties, which include houses and farmhouses all over Delhi, owe the civic body Rs 637 crore, said Yogender Chandolia , chairman, MCD Standing Committee .

He added: To start with, we have issued warnings to 116 farmhouses on Sunday and will be issuing an advertisement in the newspaper, asking these defaulters to pay up. The exact amount of tax due will also be mentioned. We hope the embarrassment after seeing their names in the national dailies will force them to clear their dues.
