| The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India(ICAI) has been celebrating its diamond jubilee this year. On this occasion, Mangalore branch of ICAI decided to felicitate 60 senior-most chartered accountants of the region. In addition, it was also decided to honour the first lady chartered accountant from the region.
At a function held in the branch office of the ICAI located at Karangalpady here, veteran chartered accountants from the region like A K Gopinath Shenoy, Raghavendra Rao of Srinivas Group of Institutions, H R Shetty, Paul Verghese and Claude Gonsalves were honoured. Srinivas Kamath, secretary of the Mangalore branch of the ICAI presided over the function and honoured the selected chartered accountants by presenting them mementoes and draping shawls around them. The first lady chartered accountant of the region Sybil Fernandes, who earlier worked for various multi-national companies in Muscat and Abu Dhabi and prsently serving as the chief financial officer of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions, was also felicitated.
Sybil Fernandes, in response to the felicitation, said that she was surprised when she was first informed that she would be felicitated for being the first lady CA of Mangalore, as she never considered being a lady CA to be very special. Thanking her mother Ida for enabling her to become a CA at 22, by providing all the encouragement needed to her in purusing the CA simultaneously with her B Com degree course, inspite of discouraging remarks coming from all around, she said that she was sent in 1979 when whe was 17 to Mumbai, a city to which she was a total stranger. She also paid her tributes and thanked her teachers for the inspiration and motivation provided by them, apart from the members of the managing committee of the local branch of ICAI for conferring the honour.
