Nod for ordinance to amend Tax Act
January, 25th 2007
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod for the promulgation of an ordinance to amend the National Tax Tribunal Act 2005. The move to promulgate an ordinance comes close on the heels of the Supreme Court's order that went into issues such as the Constitutional validity of the National Tax Tribunal (NTT).

Informed sources said that after the enactment of NTT Act 2005 a number of writs were filed in various High Courts challenging certain provisions of the legislation besides the constitutional validity of the tribunal. Based on the Government's request, these writs were transferred to the Supreme Court. The apex court recently gave directions on the various issues, sources said.
