Food Corporation of India assures Orissa to procure entire stock of paddy

Bhubaneswar: The State Government is still apprehensive whether Food Corporation of India (FCI) would be able to meet its target on procurement of paddy. As of today, the FCI has only procured 53,000 metric tonne of paddy.

In order to see the preparedness of the FCI, Union Food Secretary Aloka Sirohi and Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of FCI Deepak Panwar visited the State. The CMD, FCI has assured to that the FCI will procure the entire stock of paddy arriving in the 80 paddy purchase centres and there would be no quantitative restrictions. FCI has storage accommodations of 6.57 lakh MT in the State whereas the State Government has a very meager capacity.

FCI officials maintained that it has all the infrastructural facilities including availability of gunnies, tarpaulins and transport contracts. The technical staffs play a pivotal role in the procurement of paddy. FCI has 27 manager (QC) and 59 technical assistances posted in Odisha.

Technical personnel have been brought on tour basis from neighbouring regions of West Bengal and Jharkhanda to assist in the procurement operations.
