V.G. Mekale, deputy commissioner, sales tax department, was caught red-handed by the state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Friday while taking a bribe of Rs 7 lakh from a builder in his office here.
The builder, Yelappa Lohakare, had complained to the ACB that though he had submitted his sales tax returns from 1997 to 2004, the assessment was not being done by the department. In April 2006, he got a notice from Mekale saying that he must submit all pending dues.
Though Lohakare produced the receipts of the tax paid by him, Mekale sent him a message saying he had to pay Rs 34 lakh as dues of work contract tax.
