Know the provisions to claim tax benefits on medical expenditures ITR Filing

Many individuals have incurred significant amount of expenditure on medical tests, medicins this year amid the Covid-19 outbreak in the absence of a comprehensive health indurance cover. Even if you have a medical insurance, all tests and medicines may not get coved by your insurance company. In such a case, if you have spent a huge amount of money on medical tests, treatment and medicines for your family and self you should know the provisions of Income Tax Act that provide some relief on these expenses.

Provisions u/s 80D

As per provisions of this section, one can claim up to Rs 5,000 deduction in a year on preventive health checkups for self and family members. This Rs 5,000 is within the overall limit of Rs 25,000 that one can claim as deduction towards health insurance premium payment for self anf family. 

However, if you or any of your family members (excluding parents) is a senior citizen, you may claim deductions up to Rs 50,000 on health insurance premium and preventive health checkup (up to Rs 5,000). If you have not purchased any health insurance, then you can claim deduction up to Rs 50,000 on medical expenditure and on preventive health checkup (up to Rs 5,000 within the limit of Rs 50,000).

If you have senior citizens parents, then you can claim deductions up to Rs 50,000 on health insurance premium, preventive health checkup (up to Rs 5,000) and medical expenditures, irrespective of having health insurance cover or not.

Provisions u/s 80DD

This section will be applicable if you have any dependent having disability. This section allows taxpayers to claim deduction on medical expensitures incurred on dependent having disability. Deduction up to Rs 75,000 is allowed on medical expenditures made for such dependent. In case of severe disability, one can claim up to Rs 1.25 lakh as deduction in a financial year.

Provisions u/s 80DDB

In case the taxpayer or any of his dependents have any specified diseases such as Neurological disorder, Malignant Cancer, AIDS, Chronic Renal failure and Hematological disorders then he can claim deduction up to Rs 40,000 in a year on medical expenditure made on the treatment of these diseases as per the provisions of this section. If self or dependent is a senior citizen then deductions can be up to Rs 1,00,000.

Provisions u/s 80U

As per this section, if the taxpayere himself is a person with disability, he may claim the same deductions as available to a dependent with disability u/s 80DD, depending on the degree of disability.
