The appointment of Hon’ble Chief Justice Manjulla Chellur as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court augers well for taxpayers because the learned Judge is not only familiar with the nuances of taxation law but is also renowned for her kind and sympathetic attitude towards citizens.

The learned Chief Justice is party to several leading judgements on income-tax law. When the learned judge was in the Kerala High Court, she passed judgement in CIT vs. Mukta Shridhar 205 TM 212 (S. 271(1)(c) penalty) and C. S. Daniel vs. DCIT 220 TM 336 (valuation of immovable property). During her tenure in the Calcutta High Court, the learned judge was party to CESC Ltd vs. CIT 61 TM 92 (S. 43B deduction).

The learned Chief Justice is also party to several other landmark judgements in civil matters.

It is notable that Chief Justice Manjulla Chellur is only the second lady Chief Justice in the Bombay High Court in the 154 years of its existence. Justice Sujata Manohar was the first Lady Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. She was appointed in 1994.

Chief Justice Manjulla Chellur enjoys the distinction of the being the first lady lawyer to practice in Bellary, Karnataka, in the year 1977.

The learned Judge has had a meteoric rise in the Judiciary due to her clarity of thinking and ability to deliver quick justice to the oppressed.

The learned Chief Justice was elevated as a district judge in 1988. In 2000, she was appointed Judge of the Karnataka High Court. In November 2011, she was appointed Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court. She was transferred as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court in August 2014 and she held charge of that post till the present transfer to the Bombay High Court.

Chief Justice Manjulla Chellur is also well known for her deep interest in sports. She is particularly fond of cricket. During a match between the Judges XI and the Lawyers XI, the learned Chief Justice sportingly tried her hand at playing the gentleman’s game and also notched up good runs.
