Electronic filing of income-tax returns by non-corporate assessees has taken off in a big way going by the number of returns received by the tax department till July 31.
Although e-filing was only optional for assessment year 2007-08, official sources said that the income-tax department has received 1,46,453 returns till July 31 through this mode.
This is a very encouraging response. Increase in e-filing only shows there is better compliance to tax laws, sources added.
It was pointed out that there cannot be a true comparison with the previous year as the e-return software was put in place only after July last year.
For assessment year 2006-07, the tax department received 3,25, 000 e-returns. The majority of these returns related to corporate assessees . The Government had, last year, made e-filing of returns mandatory for corporate assessees .
Out of the 3,25,000 returns received, nearly 3,16,000 related to corporate assessees and less than 2,000 returns were by non-corporate assessees.
