E-filing of Income Tax Returns begins
July, 01st 2015

E-filing website of the Income Tax department has been made fully operational for taxpayers to file their I-T returns for assessment year 2015-16.

The Income Tax Returns (ITRs) can be filed and submitted at the official website--https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.

"The links for ITR-2 and ITR-2A were activated yesterday while the same activation for ITR-1 and ITR-4S was done as soon as the new ITRs were notified by the Central Board of Direct Taxes," a senior official said.

The department had notified the new set of ITR forms last week, including the three-page simplified form called ITR-2A.

The e-filing of ITR can be done upto till August 31, the new deadline set in this regard by the government after it had dropped the earlier forms which had attracted criticism for seeking numerous additional details like that of filers' foreign travel and about dormant bank accounts.

The ITR-2A, to be filled by those individuals and HUFs who do not have income from either business, profession or by way of capital gains and do not hold foreign assets, only asks for the passport number of the tax-filer, with the words "if available".

The ITR-2 is meant for individuals and HUFs having income from business or profession.

The tax department, beginning this time, has asked taxpayers to provide their Aadhaar number in the ITR so that it can do a back-end validation of the same and successfully process the returns in an online fashion without them taking out the paper acknowledgement called ITR-V and sending it by post to the department's office in Bangalore.
