Customs superintendent at JNPT held for demanding bribe
July, 01st 2014

A Customs superintendent attached to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) along with three clearing agents in a bribery case last weekend. The Customs officer had allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 as a bribe to release imported consignments.

Customs Superintendent APS Dhillon was arrested along with clearing agents Vikas Shewale, Hemant Sambre and Nilesh Sambre on Friday night. The trio led CBI to Rs 2.02 lakh, which they had allegedly collected as bribes on behalf of Dhillon.

The four were produced in a court at Alibaug and were remanded to CBI custody till July 2.

Dhillon, who had joined as Superintendent Examiner (Imports) at JNPT three months ago, had allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 bribe from the complainant, who is an importer. The CBI laid a trap after the importer lodged a complaint. Dhillon allegedly directed the importer to his agents Shewale and the Sambre brothers.
