Punjab to set up panel to rationalize VAT on petro products

The Punjab cabinet on Tuesday approved the formation of a committee to recommend rationalization of rates of VAT on petroleum products and automobiles.

The panel will be headed by chief secretary, with financial commissioner, revenue, principal secretary, finance, principal secretary, transport, financial commissioner, excise & taxation and taxation commissioner as members.

The cabinet also gave a green signal to include Nawanshahr district from Jalandhar to newly-created Rupnagar division.

The cabinet also approved starting Dr Hargobind Khurana post-metric scholarship scheme for meritorious students of government and Adarsh schools, who secure 80% or more marks in matriculation exams, from August 15, 2013.

It also approved to honour three students belonging to Punjab with cash award of Rs 3 lakh each, who had successfully scaled Mount Everest.

The cabinet also gave go ahead to the home department to induct 300 serving or retired para-military personnel of various ranks into the Special Protection Unit of Punjab Police.

The cabinet also decided to relax conditions for setting up new hospitals, hotels and multimedia centres. The minimum area required for setting up these would be 1,000 square meters.

It also decided to include the newly built reservoirs at Siswan and Mirzapur dam in Mohali in the notified waters of Punjab Fisheries Rules, 1985.
