With Assam government imposing 5 percent VAT on textile, the merchants will resort to one day strike on July 10 as a mark of protest.
Assam textile merchants association (ATMA) stated Assam's textile trade will be hard hit and there will massive diversion of the trade.
President of Kamrup Chamber of Commerce, M.P Jain said that States like Uttrakand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Nagaland, Goa and Delhi have imposed VAT on textile in past however later those states have withdrawn. According to ATMA around 2.5 lakh people are dependent on this sector in Assam for livelihood. There is no VAT on this item anywhere in the country. ATMA will petition the Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi and stage day long strike on July 10 to register the protest.
