With only a few days to go before the last date of filing income tax (IT) returns on July 31, the IT department will be opening special counters for the returns at its three offices in the city. For the first time under the IT return preparatory scheme, 22 IT officials will help assessees file returns for a fee of Rs 250, said Raj Kumar, Commissioner, Income Tax-I, Pune on Thursday. They will also get one per cent of the tax thus paid as a fee from the department.
More counters have been opened as salaried class generally rushes to file returns during the fag end of the closing date. Also this year, post offices are not accepting the returns, Kumar said.
To meet the rush, IT offices will also remain open on Saturday and Sunday from 9.30 am to 6 pm. Separate PAN verification counters have also been set up to verify PAN before the return is filed. Kumar said the deadline will not be extended beyond July 31. Meanwhile, crediting tax refund directly to the assessees bank account will be begin next year, he said.
