Tax officials crack down on private bus operators

Gujarat Commercial Tax officials raided the premises of a private bus operator in Danilimda on Wednesday. A team of value added tax (Vat) officials raided the workshop of the operator near Chandranagar flyover.

The officials also seized a cellphone consignment worth Rs 10-lakh from a private bus operator's office in Shahibaug on Wednesday morning. Vat officials said that a city-based dealer had imported the cellphones from Delhi and the required duties were not paid.

Officials found that the operator's workshop was used as a warehouse and stopped delivery of all the parcels packed in gunny bags inside the premises. Sources with the department said that Vat officials had got a tip off about gukta and cellphone traders using private bus operators to smuggle the goods without paying tax. During the preliminary investigations officials found that the cargo parcels, mainly from Mumbai and Jaipur, were unloaded in the workshop from where the importers in the city took delivery.
