Suspect tax evasion by Moin Akhtar Qureshi: CBI writes to CBDT Chairman
May, 29th 2014

CBI Director Ranjit Sinha has written a letter to the CBDT Chairman R K Tewari asking him to hand over all evidence regarding meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi who is being probed for suspected tax evasion. CBI wants to probe the extent of Qureshi's connections with former and present CBI officials, if any.

The IT department claims to have 500 hours of telephonic transcripts of Qureshi which allegedly show his links with the former CBI Director A P Singh. The tax sleuths have also roped in Enforcement Directorate to probe alleged money laundering in the case.

Sinha wrote a 'secret' letter to Central Board of Direct Taxes chairman asking him to provide evidence, if any, against any CBI officer, present or past, so that the same could be analysed and action taken, sources in the tax department said. The tax department is already probing Moin Qureshi for tax evasion to the tune of Rs 157 crore. But with the Central Bureau of Investigation now also taking up this case, the scope of probe just got wider.

Sources in the investigating team of the tax department suggest that there are reports that indicate that the former CBI Director, AP Singh, had introduced Qureshi to the elite social circles of New Delhi. The IT authorities are also probing whether Qureshi had any link to a heavy cash transaction between Dubai and London. In fact, in a series of searches being conducted by the IT department at various premises being linked to Qureshi, the tax sleuths have claimed to have frozen Rs 20 cr cash and jewellery so far. The Department is likely to submit a report in this investigation to the new Government shortly.
