Will make govt withdraw VAT on petrol
May, 28th 2012

The Congress government is likely to face the heat of the central governments move to increase petrol price by Rs. 7.53 the steepest-ever hike since it was deregulated.
Vijay Kumar Malhotra, leader of the opposition in Delhi assembly, said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would

force the state government to withdraw value added tax (VAT) on petrol to ease the pressure on the common man.
The recent increase in the petrol price has worked as fuel in fire during the rise in prices of all commodities. The BJP will pressure the government to withdraw VAT on petrol, Malhotra said.

He added that Delhi assemblys budget session, which was delayed due to the monsoon session and would start on Monday, would be a stormy one, as his party was all set to corner the ruling Congress on several pertinent issues affecting the common man.

We had submitted a list of 23 issues that we wanted to be discussed and debated in the assembly at length. But we have got permission to debate only two issues law & order and unauthorised colonies. The BJP will raise the remaining issues in the House under other sections, Malhotra said.

Day one, Malhotra said, would start with the BJP bringing an adjournment motion on the issue of acute scarcity of water in Delhi.

The issue of provisional certificates given to unauthorised colonies ahead of 2008 assembly elections would once again reverberate in the assembly.

With the next assembly elections just about a year and a half away and the Congress government already speeding up the procedure to regularise them, the BJP will corner the city government on the delay.

The (Delhi) government had given out provisional regularisation certificates three-and-a-half years ago. Severe irregularities have been committed to usurp crores of rupees and not a single unauthorised colony has been regularised so far, Malhotra alleged.
