DGCEI detects Rs 2540 crore evasion of Central excise, service tax

The Mumbai unit of Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence has detected over 464 cases involving the evasion of excise duty and service tax to the tune of Rs 2,540 crore, and recovered Rs 230 crore during the last fiscal.

"The evasion amount detected in the last fiscal (2012-13) was over Rs 800 crore more than Rs 1,700 crore detected in the previous financial year (2011-2012)," DGCEI sources said today.

The Mumbai unit comprises Pune, Nashik and Raipur regions.

While the agency detected 193 cases, involving evasion of Central excise duty amounting to Rs 555 crore and recovered Rs 70 crore, it unearthed 285 cases of service tax evasion totalling Rs 1,985 crore and recovered Rs 160 crore.
