The government has embarked on a massive computerisation programmme that aims to link-up information on Central and state-level taxes. The programme, called the Mission Mode project, will also include some information on income tax and will enable exchange of tax data between states and the Centre, Parthasarthi Shome, adviser to the finance minister, said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a conference on GST for accelerated Economic Growth and Competitiveness organised by Assocham, Shome said while the project was being fielded by the ministry of information technology, its management is likely to be handed over to the department of revenue.
The project may also come in handy while switching over to a unified goods and service tax (GST) regime, he added. If the project is successful, we will make it inclusive in the process of the GSTreform, Shome said.
