Arrested tax official in more trouble, in custody till Feb 17
February, 16th 2012

The Himachal deputy excise and taxation commissioner Geeta Singh, who was arrested on Tuesday, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh, may be in for more trouble as the state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau has reportedly recovered property papers during raids at her residence. Geeta Singh was also produced before the deputy magistrate at Kasuali on Wednesday and has been sent to police remand till February 17.

Inquiries reveal that raids were conducted at her Parwanoo residence and vigilance teams have recovered some papers relating to a property title. Reliable sources said the vigilances raiding party, which allegedly caught her red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh at her Parwanoo office, has recovered valuable piece of evidence showing as to how the officer was misusing her position to waive off VAT penalties.

Its a handwritten paper showing some calculations of the amount she reportedly promised to waive off in lieu of cash considerations. She tried to tear off the paper but it was seized from her possession after the raid .The evidence has been re-constructed, said an official

Additional Director General of Police (vigilance ) K C Sadyal said the bureau had been receiving reports that the officer was indulging in corrupt practices and misusing her position. It was on a specific information that a raiding party was set-up to nab her, he added. We have records of officers with doubtful integrities and a close watch is being kept on their activities, Sadyal said.
