Budget 2011: COAI demands infrastructure status for telecom sector

Under the proposed Direct Tax Code, telecom sector does not fall within the purview of the definition of Infrastructure projects.

COAI said the telecom sector is a critical infrastructure for economic growth of the country and has a direct multiplier effect on the GDP. Cellular industry lived up to the requirements & has achieved high telecom penetration at affordable prices.

COAI says, "The task is not completed as yet & significant capital infusion will be required going forward, therefore its required that telecom be classified as Infrastructure & benefits extended to the sector be available to this industry as well."
