The Finance Ministry has announced February 23 as the last day for surrendering the extra permanent account numbers (PAN) that may have been allotted to the same person by the Income-Tax Department. "This is the final opportunity given by the Income-Tax Department and henceforth if any person is found to possess more than one PAN number, he/she would be liable to penal action," an official release said here today.
The income-tax department had already asked all persons who are in possession of more than one PAN number to retain one PAN and surrender all extra PAN numbers that may have been allotted to them. The extra PAN numbers could be surrendered using one of the several modes advertised by the department - (i) Help Desk set up for this purpose in Income-Tax offices all over the country; (ii) the Assessing Officer (DCIT / ACIT / ITO); (iii) Web-site of the department www.incometaxindia.gov.in; and (iv) Aayakar Sampark Kendra (ASK) at 0124-2438000.
