Tax department extended date for filing VAT return
January, 04th 2011

The Gujarat Commercial Tax department has once again extended the date to file VAT returns. As per the state government circular on Monday, the traders have been given a three-month extension and they can now file their VAT returns by March 31.

Owing to some technical glitch with the commercial tax website, traders across the state are finding it difficult to logon to the website and file their VAT returns. In September 2010, the department made the online filing of VAT returns mandatory.

However, the circular says that the extension has been given after trader bodies and lawyers made representations stating that since it was their first experience to file online returns, they were finding it difficult to do the necessary documentation for it.

Meanwhile, in some more good news for the state traders, the department has said that if traders are not able to provide the complete miscellaneous information sought along with the audit report, then in that case reports will not be considered incomplete. Earlier, trader bodies had made representation saying that the information in addition to the audit report makes the return filing job very tedious.
