January, 25th 2009

The preventive team of excise office detected service tax evasion to the tune of Rs 2 crore by a construction company here on Thursday. Further action will be initiated soon.

Excise commissioner Ram Teerth said preliminary searches had yielded many incriminating documents. An evasion of Rs 50 lakh was detected. Further examination of documents led to detection of evasion of Rs 2 crore tax.

"So far, evasion to the tune of Rs 31.07 crore had been detected during the current financial year," he said. Of this amount, Rs 18 crore had already been realised from defaulters. Despite global meltdown and its impact on India, revenue collection targets will be met, he said.
