Civic body to overhaul house tax system
December, 28th 2012

The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has decided to revamp the entire system of house tax payment. After complaints from residents that they have to travel long distances to pay tax, the MCG has roped in few private banks where the payment facility has been made available.

"We have tied up with the Oriental Bank of Commerce to begin with, and starting January 1, 2013, the residents can pay property tax at 20 branches of this bank across the city. We are in talks with other banks as well as soon we will provide this facility there as well," said Vijay Singh Dahiya, commissioner, MCG.

"A banking representative will be there at the branch to assist residents fill the self-assessment forms and inform the tax payers about the various methods through which they can do it. The residents can pay through cash, cheques and demand drafts. The self-assessment forms will be freely available at the branches," he added.

The MCG is also in the process of uploading these forms on its website in both English and Hindi. Also, there will be a ready tax calculator on the portal which will inform the residents on how much tax they exactly need to pay. Since the amnesty for the years - 2008-09 and 2009-10 - given to the residents to pay tax expires on December 31, 2012 and still many residents have not paid property tax for these two years, the MCG has decided to request the state government to extend this amnesty scheme till March 2013.
