FM TO INAUGURATR THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ECONOMIC POLICIES FOR EMERGING ECONOMIES TOMORROW

Union Finance Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the International Conference on "Economic Policies for Emerging Economies" tomorrow i.e. December 14, 2011. Shri Mukherjee will also deliver the Inaugural Address on the occasion. This International Conference is marked as the central day of the "Delhi Economics Conclave-2011" which is being held from 12th December to 17th December, 2011 in the national capital.

The Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India in partnership with National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) is organizing this International Conference. This conference is structured as a collaborative effort with contiguous seminars hosted by Delhi School of Economics (DSE), Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi. To mark this occasion, the week of December 12-17, 2011 has been declared the "Delhi Economics Conclave (DEC) 2011". The theme of the conclave is "Economic Policies for Emerging Economies". A series of lectures, seminars and workshops are being organized during this period. Some of these events will run parallel so that participants can attend the event of their interest. Some events may spillover beyond the week also. The expected participants for the event include a broad cross section of society encompassing economists, policy makers, trade and industry representatives, experts from the financial sector, academicians, researchers and students.

The major speakers and participants during the conference on 14th December 2011 include Prof. Amartya Sen, Prof. Richard Freeman, (Harvard University), Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission Dr. C. Rangarajan,Chairman, Economic Advisory Council (EAC) of the Prime Minister, Ms. Chanda Kochar, (ICICI Bank) Prof. Klaus F. Zimmermann (University of Bonn), Prof Kishore Mahbubani (National University of Singapore), Prof Nirvikar Singh (University of California, Santa Cruz), Prof. Justin Yifu Lin (The World Bank), Dr Vijay Kelkar (Chairman, NSE), Prof. Maurice Obstfeld, (University of California, Berkeley), Mr. Nandan Nilekani, (Chairman, UIDAI), Prof. Pranab Bardhan, (University of

The Delhi Economics Conclave (DEC)-2011 - a first of its kind- is an initiative to coordinate four major economics and policy conferences contiguously over a week in Delhi. There should be a lot of cross-fertilization from these four conferences. The Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India in partnership with National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) organized an international conference on economic issues last year also. In continuation of that endeavour, but with a vast expansion of scope, this year's conference is being organized in December 2011.

During the Conclave Week, a host of other prominent speakers from India and around the world will also participate: John Roemer (Yale), Richard Smith (Cambridge), Arun Maira (Planning Commission), B. Muthuraman (CII and Tata Steel), Bhaskar Dutta (ISI & Warwick), Karl Moena (Oslo), and many others.
