List of 8,600 tax defaulters to go online in a week

The Chennai Corporation plans to upload the complete list of 8,600 property tax defaulters, involving arrears of over Rs 1 lakh, in a week.

This, the officials claim, will help execute lot of development work. We are publishing the list online so that property owners can know their status and pay arrears. The defaulters owe Rs 150 crore. We are issuing notices to all, corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said.

The corporation recently uploaded a list of 175 defaulters on www.chennaicorporation.gov.in The list included Sundram Medical Foundation (Rs 49.2 lakh), Tamil Nadu Baskat Ball Association (Rs 20.9 lakh), Indian Bank (Rs 19.86 lakh), SAF Games Village (Rs 20.48 lakh), YMCA (Rs 25.53 lakh), Indralok Hotel Pvt Ltd (Rs 1.81 cr), Hotel Ganesh P Ltd (Rs 49.6 lakh), South India Film Chamber of Commerce (Rs 31.03 lakh), Real Value Promoters (Rs 32.17 lakh), Spencer and Co. Ltd (Rs 24.28 lakh), Agricultural Society (Rs 45.99 lakh), TUCS Ltd (Rs 23.71 lakh), Canara Bank (Rs 38.65 lakh), Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Rs 50.08 lakh), Tamil Nadu Medical University (Rs 1.27 crore), Khivraj Tech Park Pvt Ltd (Rs 3.1 crore), TICEL Bio-Park Ltd (Rs 17.66 lakh) and Gems Foundation (Rs 31.51 lakh).

Officials said defaulters, including LIC, Pachiappas Trust and IOC, have begun paying up. We got Rs 206 crore towards property tax, Rs 20 crore more than the corresponding period in last year. Defaulters handed over post-dated cheques worth Rs 20 crore, Lakhoni said.
