An income tax return is basically a document that is filed as per the provisions of the Income Tax Act, reporting one’s income, profits and losses, and other deductions as well as details about a tax refund or tax liability. The Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline for the financial year 2019-20 (assessment 2020-21) earlier would have ended on November 30, 2020.

The government has now extended the deadline for filing an income tax return by a month. The new deadline is December 31. To provide relief to taxpayers in view of the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Companies other than companies claiming exemption under section 11 must furnish their income tax return in ITR-6 Form. Companies claiming exemption under section 11 are those whose income from the property is held for charitable or religious purposes. It is mandatory to file income tax returns (ITR) in India if any of the conditions mentioned above apply to you.

"The penalty for ITRs furnished on or before December 31 is Rs 5,000, but doubles that amount for later filings. However, if your taxable income is below Rs 5 lakh, the maximum penalty will be Rs 1,000. On the other hand, if the tax evaded exceeds Rs 25 lakh the punishment could be 6 months to 7 years", as per the website of the Income Tax Department.
