Certificate Course on Indirect Taxes scheduled from 30th November, 2013 at Chandigarh.

Certificate Course on Indirect Taxes scheduled from 30th
November, 2013 at Chandigarh.

Indirect Taxes Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is pleased
to offer a Certificate Course on Indirect Taxes. The objective of the course is to facilitate
members in industry as well as in practice by providing specialized and updated
knowledge of indirect taxes in a systematic manner to enable them to take up various
professional opportunities offered by this area.

As you are aware, laws and rules relating to indirect taxes have been evolving with
changing business models, growth of the economy, global developments, and
technological advances. There have been many revolutionary changes in the indirect
tax field particularly after the country adopted the policy of liberalization in 1991.
Introduction of MODVAT in 1986, service tax in 1994 and unified State-level VAT in
2005 are few of such milestones. In fact, in the last two decades, the key central indirect
taxes have almost been redrafted to keep pace with the changing requirements of a
growing economy.

Though taxation is one of the most preferred areas of a Chartered Accountant, indirect
taxes have not found much favor with our members' inspite of the same having a
tremendous scope in terms of professional opportunities for our members. One of the
reasons for such a situation could be that the practical exposure that a CA student gets
in indirect taxes is very limited and may only be in service tax or Local VAT even
though the subject was introduced in the chartered accountancy syllabus in early
nineties.

The significance of indirect taxes in the national economy can be understood from the
fact that total indirect tax revenue across India (both Central and State) would at least
be two and half times the total direct tax revenue. The importance of indirect taxes has
further increased manifold considering the fact that our country is vying for the most
ambitious and challenging tax reform it has seen since its inception, i.e., introduction of
Goods and Service Tax. GST will be a real game changer in the sense that businesses
may need to restructure themselves to fall in line with the requirements of the new tax
system. Not only the assessees, but also the Government officials as also the ultimate
consumers will have to be educated with the niceties of the new dispensation. All this
would be the harbinger of many new professional opportunities for our members and
an advisor who would not be aware of the laws governing the supplies of goods and
services by businesses, would find it difficult to guide the tax payer.

Therefore, in order to facilitate our members to take up assignments in the area of
indirect taxes and to ensure a reasonable level of preparedness in them when the GST is
implemented, the IDT Committee of the ICAI has decided to conduct Certificate
Courses on Indirect Taxes.

The next batch of the course is being scheduled at Chandigarh from 30th November,
