Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said the government will disclose names of tax evaders once it initiates prosecution proceedings against them.
"As and when the information (is received), investigation starts, prosecution takes place (and) matter comes to the court... Then, as per the existing treaty terms, we can reveal the names in cases of prosecution by the Income Tax department," Mukherjee told reporters.
The statement comes a day after TOI reported that the government had initiated a crackdown against several persons who were found to have kept unaccounted wealth with HSBC, Geneva. While the government had received details of around 700 accounts, it has so far conducted nearly 50 search operations across the country.
Besides, more information was being sought from overseas to book others. In a statement, the Central Board of Direct Taxes, however, said summons had not been issued to Members of Parliament.
