October, 17th 2011

A garment trader from Dubai was caught at the Lohegaon international airport on Saturday morning by the Air Customs officials with gold worth Rs 63 lakh.

Badrul Muneer Ambidattil (42) arrived at the airport from Dubai on Friday night. "Ambidattil was intercepted when he was proceeding to the exit gate after clearing the Customs green channel," said a Customs official. Ambidattil hails from Kunnur district in Kerala.

The Customs officials found an expensive watch and an LCD TV in Ambidattil's bag. "During body search, we found 2.5 kg of gold ornaments in his socks with a market value of Rs 63 lakh," added the official. Some documents and two cell phones have also been recovered.

Ambidattil was arrested under section 135 (1) (a) and (b) of the Customs Act, 1962 and produced before the court on Sunday. The judicial magistrate first class court remanded Ambidattil in judicial custody for 14 days.
